Ah, yes, sales tax. That's why I love Amazon. Maes it very hard to agree with paying tax on my Dell purchases (8.25% in Houston).

But back on topic, $40 doesn't seem that bad for me although I'm sticking with RF remote for now. Just wish it had IR functionality to control volume (maybe in Deluxe version, like TiVo's regular vs Glo remotes).

I was going to order one but I'm not so sure now. I fear that I will get it and not use it with my harmony and continue using the existing VUDU remote. I guess I can holdout for a little while until I hear the reviews from people.
Well, when I first got my first Vudu prototype a year ago, I was quite upset that IR was not supported. I was one of the alpha testers who at that time pushed very hard for IR support. Then I ended up falling in love with the Vudu remote and began to like it. So when I was asked to test the IR functionality, I thought it would be nice to do and nice to have but I figured that it just might not work as well as the RF remote and that I'd probably continue using the RF remote.

I've hardly touched the RF remote in the last 6 weeks or so! Most of the time that I use the RF remote it's to control the box from my office at home while I'm viewing it with my Slingbox. The IR control and the way it has been implemented works really, really, really well. I am so pleased with it that I don't think I'll have much use for the RF remote going forward. It's just so nice to have everything integrated in one remote again.

Vudu engineering did a really nice job with this. It's worth it...

Well, I can't say that I "fell in love" with the Vudu remote, but found it decent to use. But I agree with you - my "cobra" remote is now in the drawer where it's going to stay, and my Harmony remote is doing a great job of controlling the Vudu. I think the dongle is a good compromise between the general public who tends to use whatever remote comes with the device and people like ourselves who absolutely must integrate with other devices.

The Vudu remote definitely has a "cool" factor, but it's beginning to wear off so I think I'll try the dongle. I, too, have a Harmony (880)(also a 680 upstairs) and I think it's great. Does the Harmony site now recognize Vudu? It didn't when I first got Vudu. I guess it must 'cuz otherwise the Harmony couldn't "learn" the Vudu signals, right?!

Yes sir! The Vudu is under Set Top Boxes. You select it to "change channels" but of course, there are no channels to change though!

BTW, you know Logitech has software that's downloadable and you don't have to use the website anymore...

Great, that's good to know. Harmony is very good at keeping up to date. Their remotes are great, but their support is even better(almost as good as Vudu's).
No, I didn't know about the downloadable Harmony SW. Thanks for the heads-up.

I use both remotes. If I need to search fast and scroll fast I use the VUDU remote. If I am in a casual mode, I use the Harmony.

I like the "Page Down" function for the IR dongle for scrolling. Searching where I have to enter characters is a little bit of a pain - I so want to press down and have the cursor move down a line. But with the Harmony I'm always paging down rather than scrolling one at a time.

The only thing that I found I didn't like about my Harmony is that it has a limitation on the amount of commands you can you use in creating a macro (max of 5 commands). And also you cannot use one macro to call another one.

So this effectively prvented me from creating the VUDU search macro that I wanted.

I wrote to Logitech support and although they recognize the limitation, they would give no indication whether they intend to do anything about it. They said "Well just try making more macro's and then press them sequentially"

But I'm not sweating it. The Harmony limitation shouldn't be a problem with the new VUDU 1.4 version, which according to my magic decoder ring should be sometime before Sat.

I'm not sure what the improvements will be, but I'm thinking that after the update, all you'll have to do is stare at your dongle and will the VUDU box to do your bidding!!

Re: IR Dongle now available at vudu.com!

Well, I picked up the IR dongle at the local Tweeter. It was the only one they had, and it came in a very "fancy" plastic bag. It was pretty straight forward and certainly didn't need much in the way of directions, but one 'heads up' that should've been noted was the need to reboot the box after plugging in the dongle. I added the Vudu to my Harmony 880 and thought everything was OK, but nothing happened. I retraced my steps over and over to no avail. Finally, purely by chance, I decided to reboot and voila. So, that one little line in the instructions would have saved me a lot of time and head scratching. I did call and tell them.
So anyway, it's installed and working just fine. I do really like just using the one remote, especially because I also use the Harmony to control the lights in the room. One thing I do miss, however, is slow motion. It is possible with the Vudu wheel, but not with the 880. I guess I can pull out the Vudu remote for those occassional 'special' scenes which require close attention. All in all, though, I think I'm going to like it.
So, once again, Great work Vudu!!

A reboot should not be required.

As for slow motion, yes. Just hold down the right arrow button on the center up/down/left/right pad when paused. As long as you keep it held down it will do frame by frame slow motion. Play with the different buttons. Volker did a really nice job with the implementation.

This isn't an overwhelming endorsement of the design of the Vudu remote. That's one of the things that they tout (and reviewers rave about), isn't it?
