So essentially you were booted off of a thread for being off topic and then you got booted off of its replacement for being too on topic. You guys should make up your minds.

I do find it funny that Ed chose to split a thread that was specifically supposed to be something off topic. I was actually finding it interesting how many twists and turns it was taking and am rather disappointed that he went ahead and did that. It likely wasn't going to turn into an OS war. Soon, something else would have taken the topic in a completely different direction kinda like it is now.

So beware. Even if you are off topic in an off topic post, that's not allowed. When posting on something off topic - STAY ON TOPIC!

Re: OS Wars - Episode 7,658,237 - Still No Hope

Come to think of it, this whole thing reminds me of being on my boat in the San Diego Bay.

The marine radio is a lot like a CB radio. The common channel for everyone to use is 16. You use it to contact another boat and then (by common protocol) when you make contact, you determine another channel to move to for your discussion.

The Coast Guard monitors channel 16 for Maydays and if you don't move to another channel they get very irritated and they tell you to cease and desist or die.

The most interesting conversation I heard on 16 was when the USS Enterprise was leaving the bay and announced to a sailboat "Warshiip 1 to the sailboat on our starboard bow, please state your intentions."

Even if the sailboat was on starboard tack, the carrier still has right of way because of tonnage rights!

Having seen the bow wake on a super tanker that cruised past us in the middle of Lake Huron, I would not want to get anywhere near the bow wake of an aircraft carrier. Plus it would be a real downer to get stuck in the wind shadow of that boat! YICK!

Re: More off topic posts that wander anywhere...

I have another "Brain" teaser for anyone interested.

I wrote this program for Traffic Assist about 15 years. It must work ok, because their still using it.

                http://trafficassist.com/

Every 1/4 mile or so there is a magnetic loop buried in each lane of all the highways in L.A. and San Diego that reports the average traffic velocity for each lane.

I take a live feed provided by CalTrans every 60 seconds and use it to calculate the shortest and quickest routes for commuters from their point of origin to their point of destination. Each buried loop has an associated GPS co-ordinate associated to it.

So the question is: which well documented algorithm did I steal to calculate the the short and quick routes? Hint: It may (or may not) be Knuth.

For bonus points: which well known math transform did I use to transform 3D spatial co-ordinates onto a 2D map?

I would be truly impressed if some one knew the answers to those two questions!!

Nope back of the line try again.

I'll give more clues if I have to, but I would be really disappointed because this all well documented stuff. I'm beginning to think everyone is just lazy, even more than me.

Here's my clue for the day:

It is a prominent illustration of a class of problems in computational complexity theory which are hard to solve.
