    Ken,

    I forgot to ask...

How'd the movies look and sound in your theatre? Does it give you hope for the future?

Just plugged my box into my HD set today. At first glance I didn't see the difference -- then after bouncing back and forth comparing scenes between the Bourne Identity DVD, the SD version I rented, and the HD version, the HD version is definately superior! I can appreciate the additional detail -- looks great! Now I'm spoiled ... me want more ...

I have noticed that about HD in general. Now that almost everything I watch on TV is in HD, I hardly notice or bother to appreciate it any more. That is, until I go back and watch an SD TV program (way worse than SD DVD) and I wonder how I could ever tolerate it.

Yeah, trying to watch SD on an HDTV is pretty ugly. Unless I'm watching HD content I don't bother...

That's one comparison I didn't make, the quality of Vudu's HD Bourne movies to a broadcast of it on an HD station .... I assume Vudu's version would look better since the cable version is probably compressed more .. don't know ...

You know the compression and blocking on even OTA HD TV is sad. I was watching an HD show the other night received by my father in law's outside antenna. I saw significant blocking and pixelation at times. It's sad that it was like that for on OTA broadcast...

I assume it's even worse coming over Comcast's coax?

It will be interesting once the HD streaming is available. I really hope that I can get instant playback with my network. If I can't, I'll probably stick to SD because the instant playback is actually much more important to me than the HD. Usually when we watch a movie, we sit down and browse through together deciding what to watch.

Hmm..Similar but not as bad over Comcast. I've seen some pixelation back home, but generally it's half way decent. A few years ago, Comcast upgraded their network in my area to all fiber. I've got fiber to the curve and the node for my house is just out in my neighbors yard just a few feet from my property. So I have pretty decent service. I can't complain...

I'm guessing the vast majority of Vudu owners will accept the "free" Bourne movies, which means they'll always have an impressive demonstration movie available to showoff their Vudu to visitors. That is going to be a very powerful marketing tool IMHO.

I watched Bourne Identity the other night. Picture and sound were incredible. Here's hoping all the new releases will be in 5.1 digital sound. This was the first movie I have seen on Vudu with 5.1 sound. It was great. My theater has shakers on the seating platforms (Buttkickers) that need the LFE channel (.1) to work.
On this movie they worked well.
Vudu is looking better every day!!

Quick question - I just set up my Vudu yesterday. I have both of the Borne movies listed, but they're both rental only and neither of them are HD. Is this something that was just for Thanksgiving weekend?

                        Thanks

That would indicate that your software is not yet up to date. Leave your Vudu hooked to the internet for about 48 hours and you should see the HD titles.

Paul - I had the same experience... just takes a little time. I was confused as VUDU did update its software when I turned it on for the first time, but apparently there was an additional update needed. Can anyone, though, tell us what the latest software version is, so that we can check against what we have?

The current firmware is 1.1.0. The box will update automatically when not in use. But there's another component and that is the actual movie database. That updates far more frequently and takes longer depending on how out of date it is (for a new box) or how many movies are being released, etc. Right now, I think the database version released to the public is 1392. You can see all this in your info and settings area.

Updates take place at a relatively low speed (around 100kbps to 200kbps) to minimize impact on your network.

Thanks NA9D - That makes sense... I thought (and I am) up to date with the firmware at 1.1.0, but my database is still behind at 1374 - although it certainly updated overnight, as now I am seeing newer movies and the "Coming Soon" feature. So, to reiterate to those joining this conversation... what you are going to see on your box is "calculated" by a combination of the firmware and database version, not one or the other.
