So the issue is MA and not the studio?
Amazon Prime list both Special Editions for The Abyss and Aliens in HD and UHD. Is their UHD version not 4K? If it is, then it's available, just not through MA?

No, this is a studio issue. I just got off the phone with Disney Customer Service, and they are fielding feedback on this issue. Every retailer, including Vudu and Movies Anywhere, claims that this is what the studio (Disney) sent and directed them to release.

Seems strange that Amazon Prime has the Special Editions to purchase separately then. Something doesn't seem right. Either Prime got a different deal from the studios or what they are selling is not 4K?

I just don't want to see VUDU come back later and offer the SE in a separate purchase for those of us who bought day one the only option we had. I guess I should have done my homework first and bought from Prime.

I would contact the studio, either at the phone number or link I provided in previous posts, and politely let them know how dissatisfied you are. The more customers that contact them and let them know, the more likely these issues will get fixed.

I will, but what do you make of Prime offering the SE versions in UHD? How do they have them separately when MA doesn't, and do you think their UHD is the true 4K version?

Personally, I don't watch purchased movies on Prime. They typically have inferior encodes and they lack both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Amazon can do whatever they want to do, and often do not even understand what the studio has directed them to do with a title. For a time, Prime actually changed redeemed copies of Avatar The Way of Water from 4K theatrical to HD with family friendly audio. Some knucklehead at Prime Video mistakenly changed the Movies Anywhere mapped title after Disney directed them to include the family friendly audio version as a special feature. After much complaining, they fixed mine, and said that they fixed everyone else's, but many of my friends still have the HD family friendly version when they are supposed to have the original theatrical audio version.

While someone on reddit posted a direct link for the SE version in UHD and I can access that, I can't search on Amazon and find it. If I search with my account, I see only the HD version that I have and no option to upgrade. If I search logged out or logged in with another account, the special edition is marked not available, and the only one to buy is the new poster theatrical version in HD only.

I find them both easily on my laptop and phone app???
I tried posting the direct links in a reply, but I guess amazon prime links are not approved.
On prime video, not amazon, i just put in the abyss special addition or aliens special edition and it's the first option for both. Available in UHD or HD.

Except the link between Prime Video and Movies Anywhere for "The Abyss" appears to be broken.

Just looked again. Nope. They both come up with the message "This video is currently unavailable in your location." And the new one is still HD only. I have access to two additional accounts and both show the same unavailable message. I've also tried it from work, home, and phone.

Well, maybe it has to do with your location. I'm in the US and have no problem finding both with a simple search.

The link between Movies Anywhere and Prime Video for The Abyss in 4K has been corrected. Unfortunately, it is still only the theatrical version.
