    Re: should i worry?

I'll tell you why I don't worry about my titles going anywhere - if the studios began pulling movies you paid $17.99 for, consumers would stop buying titles for $17.99, and they don't want that scenario to happen. It's just not worth it for them to do it for whatever reason they come up with.

And we've actually had one case where a studio showed something - remember a few years back when Disney pulled The Lion King from iTunes and it also got pulled from the accounts of people who had purchased it. They quickly apologized and return it to those accounts. The incentive to keep its customers happy will in some ways protect your collection.

I also think when buying digital files becomes a big enough business there will be some kind of consumer protections laid out by D.C., much as there is for any other product. Right now in it's infancy it's the wild west...

The title "Carrie" was pulled from my iTunes account and probably every other account that purchased it. I got a refund from iTunes but they probably only did this because I complained. There are probably a ton of other people that bought "Carrie" that didn't even notice it was gone. iTunes just told me that they're not a streaming service and that you're supposed to download it and save it that way.

Itunes CS is my least favorite to deal with. Even though they tend to be helpful in the end. I know before they even respond they will find a way to pin the blame on me. Even if the issue is happening to hundreds if not thousands of others.

Just curious but was this before or after they did become a streaming service. They allow you to stream on an Apple TV now. They even ask when you purchase or redeem a movie if you want to download now or not.

          Re: should i worry?

On the "list of things to worry about", I'd consider losing my digital collection pretty low. But, you know, first world problems.

On a serious note, I always recommend owning a physical copy, in the highest quality available, of any movie you wouldn't want to be without should you lose your digital movies for whatever reason. The fact is, the digital movie market, at least legal, is still in it's infancy. I think both UV and DMA will be around long-term, but there is no guarantee.

It was just in November 2014 where I contacted them about this. Here is the text of their response with the appropriate sections highlighted:

When you first acquire music, purchased (i.e. not rented) movie, TV show and music video iTunes Products (collectively, "iTunes Eligible Content"), you may elect to automatically receive ("auto-download") copies of such iTunes Eligible Content on additional compatible iOS Devices (except for purchased movies and TV show iTunes Products) and iTunes-authorized computers with compatible software by associating such iOS Devices and computers subject to the association rules below (each, an "Associated Device")."
"As an accommodation to you, subsequent to acquiring iTunes Eligible Content, you may download certain of such previously-acquired iTunes Eligible Content onto any Associated Device. Some iTunes Eligible Content that you previously acquired may not be available for subsequent download at any given time, and Apple shall have no liability to you in such event. As you may not be able to subsequently download certain previously-acquired iTunes Eligible Content, once you download an item of iTunes Eligible Content, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage it, and you may want to back it up."

"Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, Apple and its licensors reserve the right to change, suspend, remove, or disable access to any iTunes Products, content, or other materials comprising a part of the iTunes Service at any time without notice. In no event will Apple be liable for making these changes."
We appreciate the customer providing Apple feedback regarding the iTunes Store. Please be assured that Apple considers all of our customers' concerns to be important. Please note that the iTunes Store is not a movie streaming service and iTunes in the Cloud should not be regarded as a back-up.
Apple records confirm the customer contacted iTunes Store Support for an issue with previously downloaded iTunes Store content. iTunes Store Support confirmed the content had been either changed or removed from the iTunes Store by the licensor, and, therefore, unavailable for re-issue in its original form. Apple, per the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions, declines the customer's request for re-issue of the previously purchased content, which is no longer available on the iTunes Store.
Apple appreciates the support of our customers, and strives to reach mutually satisfactory resolutions to all customer requests; we apologize that we were not able to do so in this instance.
            Sincerely,
            Apple, Inc.

Well that's BS. You can't even watch the Itunes Extras on your Apple TV unless you stream them. You can only watch them on your computer if you download the copy. Same on rentals. You have to stream the extras in order to get them on your appleTV. If you offer streaming you are a streaming service.

To respond in kind, they could ask you to revalidate the movie at some point, but I don't think they would want to bother unless somehow their studio contract forced them to do so. There's a lot of hypotheticals in there, like you could probably just refuse or ignore the request without admitting to not having the disc, in which case they might have to refund your money in order to remove the content from your library, or whether that clause is enforceable at all. It might be, because if you rip any content, you're supposed to delete the files if you sell or give away the original disc.

Max - Heaven forbid I should have to find 1 or however many copies of the discs that I used for D2D, there are tubs and tubs and tubs of them. I guess the next snowy weekend I should alphabetize them for easier location LOL.

All joking aside it might take about 2 weeks to get them down from the attic, sort through them, and lay them aside for re-validation purposes. I hope they never want me to go through that process, ever......

The day a provider asks me to re-validate 900+ titles is the day I stop using that service.

is it POSSIBLE to lose all the movies in a library??

the reason i ask is because i have over 400 movies and was thinking of selling the ACTUAL copy as i do a disc-to-digital copy in my vudu.

is this SAFE to do? what happens if i DO lose all my movies? do i have to start OVER?

or is it possible that in my ultraviolet and disney movies anywhere account they will still be SAFE?

just concerned about how SAFE my vudu library is?

                        please advise..thanks for your time

I don't think it would actually ever happen, but I could see it being pushed as a requirement by the studios. And if they said on the first of a month "please reverify <randomly chosen D2D movie in your collection> by the end of the month", and if you did, you didn't get asked to do it again for six months or a year, sure, that would be annoying, but it wouldn't be too onerous, and it would target those who sold their whole collections, not those who lost a disc.

The only issue with that hypothetical is that I took one disc into Walmart because the disc was not readable, but I still have the retail disc and case. They would need to be able to let us verify the disc at Walmart, too.
