Go ahead and watch the first one now (Santa told me you were on his NICE list). Then go to bed with visions of conspiracys, assasinations, and sugurplums in your head. With any luck the 3rd one will be available for you to purchase tomorrow.

BE AWARE - The third movie takes about 4 hours to download BEFORE you can watch it. Instant delivery/watching of HD content is not available with the software on your system.

How many times has she spent $400 on new clothes...

Oh wait, don't ask her that or you'll get coal in your stocking and be sleeping on the couch for the next month. There is a double standard!

Its an ok thing. The Nordstrom after Christmas sale is coming up so we should be equal on the $$ front soon.

My wife is very good at math after years of my electronics habit.

My box arrived today. It was a breeze to set up and my initial impression is excellent. Very easy to navigate. Excellent quality on the menus etc. I'm trying to resist temptation to use it for now to expedite the initial update. I will probably use it some more tonight before I go to sleep but I have not had the chance to actually watch a movie yet.

I got my system setup last night, and I'm doing my best to not touch that sexy remote! I'm hoping I'll have a chance to watch the Bourne movies tonight even though that will only be 24 hours worth of downloading. I sure hope to see some more HD available before my 30 day return window is up. That is what I want Vudu to deliver to keep me as a customer.

Re: New Vudu Users Check in Here!

I, too, got my box set up last night. The hookup was a piece of cake. (I had already taken care of fishing 75' of ethernet cable through walls and ceilings). I've played with the cool little remote, looked for movies, watched some previews, and added some movies to my wish list, but I haven't watched any movies yet. Just waiting for everything to download and waiting and waiting.
One initial observation, other than the 'afore-mentioned' ease of hook-up, has to do with the remote. I've been a Harmony user /lover for many years and thought I'd object to the Vudu remote not being IR, but I don't. Maybe it's the new and really cool factor which may eventually wear off, but for now it's just fine. Plus, it even looks like it might have more pause and slow-mo "useability" for those "special" scenes than what I have with my Harmony.
Can't wait for a real test drive.

Got my box and set up was easy. The biggest disappointment was to find that 480p was the max. resolution with component video. Picture quality really is bad at htat resolution.
No other device in my house has this limitation.

I'm using the component connection on my oldest LCD panel (in our workout room). The picture quality looks at least as good as a DVD player going to the same TV. I'm talking about SD, not HD but I'm not sure why it would be that bad for you.

The quality at 480p is quite good. Are you sure you are at 480p and not 480i? This limitation is imposed by the studios. Most upconverting DVD players limit you to 480p over component video as well.

Re: New Vudu Users Check in Here!

As a new user, this seemed the best place to post this commentary... I am excited about Vudu and what the company is trying to do. I hope that, when fully implemented, Vudu will be a legitimate Netflix-killer, and will be able to stay a step or two ahead of Apple, which I suspect will be Vudu's primary competition (though the initial version of the Apple TV is hardly a worthy adversary). There are many things to like about Vudu (see below), and several potentially fatal flaws. For the record, here are some of the positive features/benefits:

                          1) Setup is a breeze, and the UI is exemplary - intuitive, fast, simple. Well done indeed.
                          2) The non-HD video quality is very good - surprisingly good on my 55" plasma - except for scenes shot in low light, which show lots of visible artifacts (jaggies and pixelation). I wonder whether Vudu considered using a Faroudja chip, which would really make non-HD content look great (and wouldn't necessarily add significant cost; see http://oppodigital.com/).
                          3) Good back catalog from studios, e.g., most of AFI's top 100 films, etc.
                          4) Bourne trilogy in HD.

If Vudu can't at least get on par with Netflix, however, it might be a lost cause. More specifically, here are key issues by my reckoning:

                          1) Customers must be able to rent (versus buy) movies, and on the same day that they're available at Netflix (or Blockbuster, for that matter). Period.
                          2) Vudu must stream sound in DD 5.1 (whenever available), even for non-HD movies. If my choice is to watch, say, Pirates of the Caribbean in stereo from Vudu (even with PLII surround processing) or in DD 5.1 from Netflix, I'll choose Netflix every time. As others have certainly noted in these forums, great sound quality is absolutely central to the experience! Movies like Pirates, the Mission, Blade Runner, and Top Gun, for example, among many, many others, lose major impact without true 5.1 sound...
                          3) Vudu must add HD content. I won't beat a dead horse here, as Vudu clearly understands this priority. Otherwise, and obviously, the format war (HD-DVD vs Blu-ray) IS the issue, and Vudu is not in the running.
                          4) Vudu should have wireless capability (802.11n ideally) built into the box. This is not a deal-breaker, but too many customers (potential and actual, as evidenced by posts in these forums, and including me) have their Vudu boxes nowhere near their routers.
                          5) Finally, I believe Vudu must add IR (i.e., universal remote) compatibility... Granted, the little Vudu remote is well-designed and very cool, but it defeats the whole point of having my Harmony 1000, which I love (and my wife loves even more)!

Rereading this list, put simply, I think the key issue is that Vudu must get the studios to play ball, at least to level the playing field. Vudu has great promise. As you might surmise, I am a quintessential target customer and A/V geek who can impact a lot of potential customers...

                          Comment

Re: New Vudu Users Check in Here!

New user here...overall quite impressed with the box, but like others anxious for what's in store.

                            Early thoughts...

                            Strengths:

                            (1) Remote - easy to use, and great design. Is there a way to sell an adapter/antenna to use this with my DVR? ;-) Also would be pretty cool to see an adaptation with a trackball where the scroll wheel is, or with a Wiimote-like accelerometer in there, as I think it would be a nice "HTPC" mouse. But I'm getting ahead of myself, and for current purposes of movie-watching/browsing, the remote works great.

                            (2) UI - very slick, looks great on my HDTV and I anticipate showing off to friends.

                            (3) Ease of use - no problems setting up, though I did have to move my internet connection and router into the TV room, would have been nice to have wireless built in but not a huge inconvenience.

                            Areas for improvement:

                            (1) Content, content, content - I know this dead horse has been beaten, but Vudu needs to do whatever it takes to keep content ahead of the competition. Getting films the day they are available as DVDs is critical. When I was showing the Vudu off to my wife, most of the films she asked about were "Coming Soon" or "Available to rent in Jan XX" even though they are out on the shelves elsewhere.

                            (2) HD - I know Vudu's on this path, but it would be great to have HD versions of any new releases. The same films are available on my TWC On-Demand in HD, and given the choice I'd rather choose the HD version.

                            (3) Rental model - Everything should have a rental option - I don't expect to ever purchase an entire movie. Also, I would gladly pay $9.99/mo for unlimited movie watching. I know this is not the business model choice Vudu has made (or one that studios would support), but for those accustomed to Netflix or BB Online, it is a lot easier to get used to.

                            (4) Additional functionality - other than the remote and UI, I don't yet see the killer app that would make me run up and down the hills proclaiming the wonders of Vudu. The focus on movies and TV content is appropriate (I get the "do one thing well" approach), but would be nice to have some of the AppleTV-ish features in here, such as photo streaming, ability to view own videos, etc. I'm sure there are other nifty features that could be added - I'd love a "start page" module with weather, news feeds, etc. that could be navigated with the remote, or even a simple game or two (a la Brickbreaker). Just think a few bonus features would please the early adopters....put that "More" button to good use!

I'm pulling for Vudu - don't want to see Apple own this space based on brand alone, so I am glad for the competition. Vudu is an excellently designed product - so the team should be proud of that. I'm excited to see what 2008 brings, as this space is heating up and I hope that Vudu can stay ahead of the pack.

Hi all. I'm 61 years old and have been an avid TV watcher and movie goer since I was a little girl. I always wanted a sharp, crisp, crystal clear picture with great contrast but was never able to adjust my TV set to that end and movies (at the theater) have never achieved that quality.

Last night while watching HDX previews on VUDU, I thought to myself, "this picture quality is beyond my wildest dreams!" Finally, at 61 years old, I have the picture quality I've always wanted! Thank you so much VUDU!
