      Thanks for the link. I thought the Video Download Details were intriguing. All formats are in stereo, and on a TiVo, it's letterboxed, not WS.

        One thing that Amazon Unbox got right is that they keep track of which movies you have bought so you don't need to store all of your purchased movies on your own Tivo forever.

        Even though I prefer to rent movies, I would consider paying the full purchase price for a movie that was "purchase only", if I really wanted to see it and didn't have to permanently give up disk space. I think Vudu should consider a similar capability. If they did, people might buy more movies and there would not be the need to support USB external drives.

          Vudu does the same thing in terms of keeping track of what you purchased. However, AFAIK, the studio agreements do not allow this "purchase and delete" option with the movie still available. I asked for this sort of thing probably 6 months ago and was told that it was not in the contractual terms.

          It makes complete sense both from a user standpoint (ie: no need for massive storage) and from a piracy stand point as if only pieces of my content are stored on my drive and additional pieces everywhere else, it is impossible for me to open my box, break the encryption and extract the movies files. Well, you could perhaps extract the pieces, but that's hardly a whole movie...and who's going to go through all the trouble for a 5 or 10 minute chunk...

          In fact, it could be stored almost indiscernibly on the box. You could break down the bit stream in all sorts of ways were perhaps every 3rd or 4th bit is missing and needs to be filled in, etc. Then the content on the box isn't even readable regardless...

          It would be a win-win for both studios and consumers...I can't for the life of me figure out why they don't have this arrangement...

            Amazon Unbox stores your purchased videos in Your Media Library for re-download - so your videos don't have to take up all the space on your TiVo DVR. (Please note that due to licensing restrictions certain new release movies are unavailable for re-download for an unspecified period of time starting 90 days after their release date. While these movies can be viewed as often as you like during this window, they cannot be re-downloaded from Your Media Library.)
            It is a little fuzzy about the terms, using the words "certain new release movies" and "unspecified period of time". I'm not sure exactly what this does mean, but it sounds like they are taking it in that direction ultimately.

              I hate to stir up this pot again considering this is a month old thread, but I disagree redwin. it is not just important to a few people, it can be down right vital. working at a public museum I am often struggling with accessibility, but it is just one of those things you have to suck up and do. it really is better in the end, even if it is for a small group of people. I understand VUDU has to get a product up and running, and the box can be updated. I really think this should be a priority...I can almost live without extras if the captioning is in place.

                  Do you run/own a business? Set aside your passion for this topic a moment and ask yourself the following hypothetical question:

                  What would generate more sales (Vudu boxes and movie rentals/purchases) for Vudu - making 250 more HD titles available to the Vudu community, or delivering CC? I believe it is a better business strategy to drastically expand the content first, then deal with enhancements like CC after you have got the ship sailing along smoothly. I don't think any of you could honestly say that Vudu would be better of financially if they put CC in front of delivering the content.

                  Slightly Off Topic - How many Youtube videos have you seen with CC? I'd bet that it's not many. That doesn't seem to have impacted their success, has it? Have any of the folks passionate for CC made a concerted effort to demand this from Youtube? Are there any efforts to boycott Youtube for this oversight?


                  Sort of back On Topc - My Vudu is able to recreate/replace my movie theater going experience. I have never been to a theater that offered/included CC with the movie. It is my understanding that the Vudu content is being encoded/compressed from the original theatrical source, not from a DVD that has CC material. The request to provide some sort of CC support is not a minor change. If they are going to take it off of the DVD's, that is going to require some delicate contract negotiation. I'm guessing traditional CC material is more closely tied to the companies producing the DVDs. Imagine this phone call featuring the DVD Production Company Representative (DVDREP) and the Vudu Content agent (VUDU):
                  Phone rings.

                  DVDREP: Hello, how can I help you?

                  VUDU: I'd like to get a copy of the CC Content that you guys put on that DVD of Heidi please.

                  DVDREP: What would this be for?

                  VUDU: We want to sell it on the Vudu network, a cool new system that eliminates the need for those DVD's you've been producing.

                  DVDREP: How many copies of the DVD would you be purchasing?

                  VUDU: We only need 1, but I guess we should buy 2 in case we accidentally scratch the first copy while dumping your CC effort into our servers.

                  DVDREP: Hmmm, let me get back to you on this.....
                  I may not have it totally right, but I'm thinking that the current economic model is disrupted by this sort of technological innovation. Many lawyers and agents will have to get their fingers in the pot before the thing you desire can be realized. It is not a quick easy fix.

                    I think CC is important especially for British movies but not as important to me as HD content.

                    Granted those folks that are hearing impaired will most likely not buy the Vudu without CC. That being said, I dont think the Vudu has crossed out of the Early adopter faze yet and I think that the majority of early adopters would want HD. I know I do. No HD, Vudu back to the store.

                        I can't argue with your biz sense Nded. I for one would appreciate more HD content over CC if I had to really choose. But VUDU has already shown proof of concept for HD. It would be nice if they did the same thing for CC. I could settle for that.

                        But honestly...what is CC gonna cost for VUDU in $$$ and manpower?

                          Don't worry, I'm not boxing it up yet. I'm on board for at least another 28 days.

                          But lack of HD would be a deal breaker for me. I was totally burn by Moviebeem. The good news is based on past experiences my expectations are low. Nowhere to go but up from here. So far I'm impressed. All the Bourne movies are local and I'm ready to watch.

                            Actually the cost is going to be a bit high since the content from the providers doesn't include subtitles. Also everyone that has asked for CC seems to think it works the same way as a DVD subtitle works. Remember the VUDU is using H.264. VUDU would be blazing a new standard at this time to create CC/Subtitles.

                            DVD's use MPEG-2 and the subtitles are provided via a function that has a second video track that contains the subtitiles.

                                Yes but is Apple sharing the technology or opened it up in the public domain? If its not part of H.264/MPEG-4 as a open standard I would still say the VUDU would have to come up with their own.

                                Here are the latests updates to the standard...none show CC/Subtitles:
