Absolutely, there are very few off the shelf boxes I could plug in to a TV right now and get access to 10000+ films.

      - No IR Control
      - No Extended Rental
      - No 48 hour viewing limit on indie films
      - No Archive/Delete function
      - Lots of titles but most off beat - not a large number of "current" movies

I could go on. The box has come incredibly far in 1 year. Oh and the price did go down $100. It was $400 when it was first launched...

More good stuff to come too as I understand it (course, I know NOTHING).
Dang, they have come a ways in 12 mo's.

Hey, he was trying to make Vudu look tempting to new customers, not to scare people away!

I hope they plan on trying a tv show approach like appletv. Im considering picking one of those up after Christmas for tv programming as opposed to unbox on my laptop. I just cant take it too seriously until it has 1080p.

Yeah, it would be nice. I have an AppleTV too and it's nice being able to get shows that you've been unable to get elsewhere.

I just did some digging and it appears Jobs said AppleTv will remain a "hobby" in 09, think Ill save my $$$ and continue with my laptop to the Panny from Amazon. I bought an audio cable this weekend and can run audio from my laptop to my Onkyo, so watching tv shows off amazon is fine by me, and it means I dont have to have another box.

I have a Sony VAIO PC with a BR read/write drive and HDMI output.

But I have yet used it to connect to my TV. It's just too much hassle hauling it from my office room to my entertainment room and hooking it up just to watch something on TV from it.

I also have never burned a BR disk from it after I found out how much blank BR disks cost.

So it turned out to be kind of a waste of money for me. I pretty much just use my pc to do my finances and hassle VUDU forum posters.

Hehe, my laptop makes it easy. I leave the SVGA cable laying behind the tv and the audio cable on top of the Onkyo, takes me longer to get to Amazon than it does to hook my laptop up to the TV. Im still amazed at the PQ, much better than SDTV.

I agree that VUDU needs to seriously beef up TV side. I'm kinda torn right now on how I should organize TV shows -- store them on NAS or have them on Blu-Ray. Probably will stick with NAS since many shows don't show up on Blu-Ray even when broadcast in HD.

Re: Just orded a Vudu box...

I currently have an Apple TV but I'm starting to think that a Vudu would be a nice complement. ATV is pretty good for HD tv shows, and media streaming, but the HDX movies really have me thinking about adding one to my setup. The $200 credit at Best Buy doesn't hurt either! I was at first bummed about the no built-in wireless but I just found out that my Directv DVR (which I have hooked up to an airport express) has an ethernet pass-thru (I'm such an idiot- I always wondered what the second ethernet port was for!) so I could just plug and go with a nice Vudu.

Any advice on how to convince the wife that we need 2 VOD devices? Seems clear to me!

Oh but I love my ATV! I think they are really almost two different devices. The ATV is really a great streamer whereas the Vudu really seems to be getting the HD movies thing going. Honestly I couldn't see not having an ATV at this point but I am definitely feeling Vudu as a holiday addition to the family.

Unfortunately, since AppleTV has no interest in 1080p movies and improving PQ at this point, youd forced into two. If Vudu added a great selection of tv shows (new stuff), then Vudu would replace AppleTV completely.

As of now, Im stuck with Vudu for movies and Amazon for tv shows, Id soon use Vudu for it all.

I agree about ATV's lack of interest in 1080p. Sounds like the HDX movies on Vudu are pretty awesome. I guess it depends on your usage though. Our ATV gets ALOT of use by the kids listening to music, watching their DVD's (ahem), and photo slideshows of the kids bring tears to the eyes of grandparents.

So in the end I think these devices are complimentary, which sucks. Ok, I've just decided. Vudu for the holidays. Maybe the wife won't really even notice it's there.
