I the current cycle counts for IDE drives based on manufacture specifications is 50,000+ spin up cycles. Thats a lot....power cycles.

Actually, it's not a problem at all. What do you think your computer does when it reboots? What you don't want to do is move (apply shock to) the box while the drive is running...

What if the VUDU is writing to the drive when you pull the power cord?

Well, that's not hard on the drive but more on the OS or the file system. The software is robust enough that it's fine. The beta team has abused their boxes quite a bit through various reboot cycles and loads. It won't hurt it...

              Yes I did. Thanks!
They played back fine after rebooting. I watched parts of both of the movies(they looked and sounded good by the way.)( I'll directly compare some parts of the Bourne movies to the HD DVDs this weekend) and looked around the VUDU menus before turning it off so the VUDU can do more downloading. The Bourne Ultimatum was still showing as "coming soon" and I plan on purchasing it once it's available.

It is not an issue of mechanical failure, it is an issue of data integrity. When you just unplug a device, you can cause the integrity of the data to become unstable, and it is these disk errors that pile up that can cause a great amount of lost data and general instability. That's why when you shut your PC down and select shutdown from the start menu, your computer does a safe shut down, and not just turns-off immediately. However, if you want to take that risk, more power to you.

The VUDU is an appliance. Its designed with data integrity in mind. Any good journaled file system and robust application can work though a power cycle. Even the HD are now powerfail aware and have data protection built in.

Yeah, but Vudu wasn't developed by Bill Gates. Trust us on this.

The Bourne Ultimatum HD showed up this morning for purchase. I purchased it but it says that it won' t be available to view for a few hours. I thought the VUDU would be able to stream the HD just like the SD, or will that ability be inplemented in the next firmware update?
Bandwidth is no problem since I have a 30mbs FIOS connection. It's been an hour now and it still shows that it is downloading and not viewable yet. I'm guessing it has to download it completely before I can view it?

Instant HD viewing is part of the software update you should be getting this week. It has worked great in the beta test phase.

The Bourne Ultimatum will likely not be available for instant streaming even after the upgrade to 1.2. It has to do with the way they did the encoding.

I see it was available to watch after around two thirds of the movie was downloaded. And then it must have been downloading very slow because it took over 7 hours total for it to finally finish downloading the entire movie.
I would think it's slower downloading when it's mainly downloading from the servers and not peer to peer?

Re: Bourne Trilogy in HD available on VUDU soon!

I compared some of The Bourne Ultimatum to the HD DVD tonight. I used the scenes from the explosion by the car to the foot chase scenes since they seem to have a good combination of low light and bright light scenes as well as good use of all speakers. I use a 7.1 system with Dolby PLIIx cinema setting in use. I also output 1080P24 from both devices without any post processing of the video like I would normally do in my setup

The VUDU outputs a DD track transcoded from a DD+ track and I used the DD+ track on the HD DVD. Although after I finished I realized I should have used the optical out of the HD DVD player which outputs a transcoded DD track as well.

I thought the picture from VUDU held up favorably compared to the HD DVD. The differences could mainly be seen in lowlight scenes but overall I was pleased with how it looked. The VUDU version sounded good too. The HD DVD DD+ track had more depth but I was also going back and forth between them and I could hear the difference which was expected.
I have no complaints at all with the VUDU HD version of the Bourne Ultimatum. The HD DVD is better but that is expected. The VUDU though is about being quick and convienient. I can sit and and decide to watch it right away(once they enable HD streaming).
Of course for certain movies I will still want to rent the HD DVD/BD or buy it but I can see me using the VUDU service alot becasue it will be quick and easy. As long as they will have a good selection of titles I will use them. Because for me I never know what I will be in the mood to watch. Sometimes I will rent a title fromNetflix and it will sit around for months becasue I'm not in the mood to watch it. The VUDU will eliminate this since I can easily choose a title depending on what mood I'm in.

I'm definitely very pleased with the VUDU service. I look forward to using it more and more this year.
