    VUDU vs Satellite

With everyone focused on ATV and Xbox, I don't think you should write off or ignore what Directv is up to.

Directv provided a slide show at their investors meeting that gives some insight to their immediate plans this year.

Their new D11 HD Mpeg4 capable satellite is now heading for it's sea launch location scheduled for March 14.

Here's a link to the slideshow for anyone interested: http://library.corporate-ir.net/libr..._Master_v1.pdf

    Your burning my eyes out....

I read the press release from DirectTV and I don't know how long it will take to bring the serivce online after the Satelite is in orbit. It took over 18 months to start getting MPEG4 out of these guys. Nothing movies fast at DirectTV.

Their beta version is already available, but so far they have only 8 HD titles at the moment to rent. They have a lot of SD content available, but most of it is 4:3 with stereo (so far).

The satellite is estimated to be live and operational by mid-May.

Currently if you order a movie from their On-Demand service, it sends the movie to your DVR via broadband. But it seems like their intent is to push the movies to you via satellite instead (when they get the bandwidth to do so). Because of satellites inherent ability to push lots of bandwidth, this may put them in a posistion to deliver content with the best picture and sound quality.

Remember after the initial bright light, there's the long term fallout. So get your bunker ready and stocked.

DTV is doing interesting things with their VOD over broadband. Basically it's whatever programs the networks want to make available on-demand (including the movie channels), but it's a pretty good start. Once again, it's all dependent on what content providers provide. But there are already some PPV movies in the VOD listing

The HD DVRs have had their "Showcase" area for a few months now, basically with promo videos and such. But combine their PPV mechanisms with the ability to push the content and it gets a little interesting.

But let's not forget that this content is, and always will be, limited.

Last year the CEO was talking about rolling 1,000's of HD titles once they get going.

So I wouldn't be so sure about that. Not enough evidence to bet my meds on yet, but I still wouldn't count them out either.

Through their VOD-over-broadband service? That I can see. But they aren't going to be pushing that many to the boxes obviously.. And I don't think they're going to be doing HD VOD over satellite....

Right now DTV's VOD-over-broadband isn't instant-viewing either. It takes a few minutes before you can start viewing while it's still downloading.

The story I've heard so far is that you are correct they would only push the most popular titles via satellite and the rest via broadband. Since I've already ordered a few of their HD movies via broadband and PPV HD via satellite the capability is definintely there today in at least some fashion.

The movies I've ordered via broadband did take a while before you could view it, but only by about 5 to 10 minutes or so. You don't have to download the whole movie first. I've stated many times instant viewing is nice but not a deal killer, if I can get a better picture/sound quality in return for the wait.

The picture and sound quality was pretty good too. But it's been a while since I wacthed them so can't really compare to VUDU. I won't be able to either until they come out with some more titles I haven't already seen. Currently they are really lagging with title availability, so I find myself watching movies from VUDU before they are even available from Directv!!

Instant VOD over satellite is not practical. Think of the ramifications and bandwidth here. You have 10,000 people who all want to watch different content all at different times on a Friday night.

That's a lot of RF bandwidth needed from the satellite on top of their programming...

I can't argue the technology with you, because I don't really understand it that well. My understanding is that it would be something like Huges Net via Directv satellite with the internet used as a return path for customer input.

That's the extent of my feeble knowledge base.

I used to be a sat expert, but ever since the alzheimer's disease set in, I've already forgotten more than I'll ever know.

With mutiplexing of the signals of the transponders you got a whole lotta bandwidith there.

I agree and I didn't have time to go into it, but 10,000 is probably a small number of people wanting to rent things. That is still a lot of bandwidth even when multiplexing.

It's more likely going to be that DirecTV will download the top 5 to 10 movies to your box and have them stored there on a rotating basis ready for you to watch whenever you want...That would make sense...

What about the concept of downloading 100 to 1000 headers via Sat and then getting the rest as needed via broadband when you watch a title?

That is what I was thinking. All the new DTV DVR boxes are networked out of the box (both coax and/ip Cat5) and they could follow the same path as the VUDU or even download the "popular" ones like Jon stated and then just the heads and stream the rest from the INTERNET or satellite.

Well now that DirecTV bought ReplayTV, maybe they'll also enable IVS!
