The HDX & HD versions are both cropped (1.78:1). But the SD version is in the correct aspect ratio (2.40:1)

Well, at least now I don't feel so bad about the Indiana Jones movies not being available in D2D since there'd be no reason to want them . Batman Begins is totally perplexing. I guess that WB must've prepped a cropped version for HDTV airings and inexplicably handed that out as the master or something.

But the Amazon Instant Video version is 2.40:1. So are Blazing Saddles and The American President(2 other WB titles in 1.78:1 on VUDU). So are all the Indiana Jones movies. I don't buy for a second that VUDU is stuck with these cropped transfers. This is a problem that could be and should be fixed.

Really? I didn't know that. That is very odd. CinemaNow's version of Ben-Hur is in the right ratio too. I wish I'd examined this thread before I wasted $2 on that one . The only version of it ever see on TV is OAR on TCM, I've never seen it cropped on TV elsewhere. Maybe there was a 1.33 version, but I don't think it was ever 1.78.

Shame the accounts can't be linked. Do they do this cropping themselves then? Drive is another oddity, a fairly recent film which inexplicably has a cropped transfer. I assumed that this was an issue inherent with the masters, but sometimes, I have to wonder...

I agree. When I find a cropped video on Vudu, I go check it out on MGo (if the movie's UV). Most of the time they have the OAR version. Off the top of my head, I recently watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Maverick, Blazing Saddles, Mysterious Island, 300, and John Carpenter's Vampires at MGo. All in the correct aspect ratio.

If MGo can get the OAR versions, why can't Vudu?

Flixster, Vudu's own sister site partner, has both Batman Begins and particularly Ben-Hur in the right ratios, though not Die Hard 2 or Drive. Still, not a particularly good reflection on Vudu.

The OAR for Godzilla vs. Monster Zero should be listed as 2.35. It was shot on Tohoscope anamorphic 35mm.

It's weird, so does CinemaNow. They have Ben-Hur and Batman Begins in the correct ratio as well. Though oddly neither they nor MGO have Die Hard 2 as it should be. I wonder if they have HDTV masters or something that they distribute cropped? Do the distributors just get what they get? I can't imagine Vudu having the time or inclination to crop the image themselves. Either way, fixable or not, it's clearly not something that Vudu have much inclination to try.

Watching Apollo 13 on my Samsung TV on the app, it is clearly the wrong aspect ratio. Everything is squished. Seems to look fine when I watch it on the computer (SD) but on the TV app, it doesnt look good

Found one that I'm not sure has been reported yet. Pure Country from 1992 in HDX should be in Widescreen but it's full frame. Not a huge deal given it's not an action film but still a downer given it's George Strait's only big-ticket flick to date.

There are not many things I'm good at in life, but I know my Godzilla . Shame that none of these look like they're ever getting fixed. With the unnecessary upcoming remake of Ben-Hur, it'd be a crime if those looking to see the original wound up seeing a horribly cropped version of the masterful Ultra Panavison 70mm cinematography.

A new one for the list:

Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

                              Filmed in 2.35:1

                              Presented on Vudu in 16x9

Also, the audio is out of sync with the picture.

Yeah, i opened a case for "Cube" sd ratio being wrong. They had me send a picture of the problem. I was like, seriously.. To say the least ive been following up with them for months and got no responses after the first, we will fix it. My thought is its not going to be fixed and we are just getting the, "I'm on top of it, Rose".
