Re: Chromecast Ultra with 4k / HDR / Dolby Vision support !!

I had a Twitter conversation with @madebygoogle yesterday who asked me to run through which apps / streaming services were affected by this issue. They quickly asserted that it was a Vudu casting issue (Vudu software problem) and not a CC ultra issue, since other HDR services, e.g Netflix were fine.

I requested that they let Vudu know however they were quick to distance themselves from the issue, basically it's up to us to let Vudu know.

To be clear, I was almost certainly chatting with customer services rather than a software or hardware expert.

    What's plan B?

It's a darn shame these big companies can't communicate with each other!! I've tried opening a case with Vudu support and I got nothing. I've tried posting about it here on the forum, nothing. So I suppose we'll just have to wait and hope it gets fixed, but as it is right now, my UHD titles on Vudu are unwatchable.

Has anyone connected Chromecast via Oppo udp203 and got it to display Dolby vision or Dolby Atmos sound? I tried but was unsuccessful, thought I may be doing something wrong

Finally got @VuduFans to reply by tweeting to various social media tech sites. They say @VuduSupport will help... Let's wait and see...

I haven't tried the Chromecast but I have my Nvidia Shield connected to the Oppo and I am able to get Atmos. Oppo has indicated that the HDMI input can get HDR-10 but not Dolby Vision under the latest beta firmware. I'm not sure if it will ever support Dolby Vision on this port?

@VuduSupport are looking at it apparently.

Hate to volley it back... but it's definitely a Chromecast firmware issue.

The CCU player is incorrectly signaling the TV that the content is HDR10 when it is not - the color/brightness issue seen is because the actual colorspace is (SDR) Rec.709 (or Dolby Vision), but the TV is being told it is (HDR10) BT.2020 / ST2086. It's likely a bug in handling "Dolby Vision Profile 4" streams (a format that has both SDR/Main10 and Dolby Vision embedded in a compatible way).

We are working with Google to get it fixed, but I assume it will require a firmware update.

How is your connection? Did you have to do any special settings in setup menu for Dolby Atmos?

Hopefully when it's fixed, it will support Vudu HDR-10...

No, but I'm using the Nvidia Shield and not the Chromecast with the Oppo. I just played one of these samples:

Thanks for this information, Jake. This answers a longstanding question I have had about the SDR/DoVi implementation VUDU is using for the UHD tier.

Do you know/can you say if the DoVi stream will remain Profile 4 following the introduction of HDR-10?

You may PM if considered OT.

This is what I tried telling @madebygoogle since Roku and Nvidia Shield don't have this issue.

I finally got v1.26.92486 pushed to my CCU, but this did not fix the problem.

Playing UHD title with VUDU app still causes TV to switch into HDR10 mode.

                                I'm also using
                                Cast firmware version: 1.26.92486

I've had limited success manually adjusting my TV settings, the best so far being:
HDMI EOTF Type : Traditional Gamma
                                HDMI Colorimetry Type: Rec. 709
                                HDMI Range: Normal (not full)
                                HDMI YCbCr Range: Normal
                                HDMI HDR: Off

Anything else and my picture is way too over saturated (Rec 2020). Or completely burnt out (ST. 2084).
However I'm not entirely satisfied with the above setup, I think whites are slightly muted and colour looks a little washed out, but at least we're no longer seeing Oompa Loompa skin tones.

I used to like it when the picture just worked out the box with everything set to auto, but between Vudu app and CC Ultra firmware this is no longer possible.

I'm not confident so I don't want to view half baked movies, so still waiting for someone to find a fix....
